Presentation abstract: Stack traces and stack trace profiles provide important insights on the working of Linux processes and can be applied to advanced Oracle troubleshooting and internals investigations. In this talk we will show methods and tools that can be used to generate stack traces and stack trace profiles for Linux processes and in particular for the Oracle executables. We will illustrate with examples of interest for Oracle practitioners, the use of on-CPU and off-CPU flame graphs visualization of the stack profiles and we will discuss how these techniques can provide insights beyond what is available with the more standard Oracle instrumentation and wait event interface.

Speaker biography:  Luca Canali is a Senior DBA for CERN in Geneva with 15+ years of experience using Oracle products in the sectors of research, finance and telecoms. Since 2005 he has been working at the start-up and support operations of the database services for physics at CERN. Luca has presented at Oracle User Groups conferences in the recent past on the topics of ASM internals, RAC, DB storage performance measurement and troubleshooting, Oracle compression, ACFS and Data life cycle management, Active Data Guard, OS tracing tools.
